I personally would leave the flare as a slick plate, I've found that this area is neccessary for seperating/stratifying your fed material, giving the heavy's time to seperate before hitting the riffles or matting. Then there is this mat clip I keep seeing at the head of the box in between the flair and the box to pressure hold down the hog matting.
